Name :Birch Leaves
Latin :Betula verrucosa Erh. or B. pubescens Erh.
Family :Betulaceae
Habitat :Colder parts of the Northern Hemisphere, where they are among the dominant woody plants in Arctic and Alpine regions. They are not restricted to these areas, however.

Description :Leaves of the silver or white birch--short-lived trees or shrubs having simple petioled leaves and typically a layered membranous outer bark that peels readily.Aqueous alcoholic extracts of the leaves cause a diuretic effect in lab rats, attributed to the 2 to 3 percent content of flavonoids. Some research has been done in other countries; no toxicity or contraindications have been associated with its use.The patient must drink plenty of water while using this herb.
Uses :Birch leaves have a mild diuretic effect, and are used as a treatment for kidney and urinary tract infections.
