Gentian has been used as an appetite stimulant and digestive aide. In Europe, alcoholic drinksare flavored with gentian and are consumed before heavy meals. Herbalists extol its use for fever, forstimulating menstrual flow, as an anthelmintic, or as an antiseptic.
