Indian Bdellium Tree | | Name : | Indian Bdellium Tree | | Botanical : | Commiphora Mukul | | Ayurvedic : | Guggul, Guggal | | Parts Used : | Gum Resin | | Habitat : | Guggul is spiny shrub or small tree with many branches, usually growing two or three meter high, and found in the arid, rockytracts of Rajasthan, Gujrat and Kamatka in India. A healthy tree yields250-500 grams of resin in one season, and guggul plants typically beginyielding resin after five years. | | Constituents : | The National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, India, incollaborationwith the Central Drug Research Institute of India, began adetailedchemical study of the hypocholesterolemic/hypolipidemic activityofguggul. The ethyl acetate soluble portion of guggul was found to posses hypolipidemicand anti-inflammatory properties. The ethyl acetate insoluble portionwas found to be toxic. Further, acid, base and neutral portionsofethyl-acetate-solubleguggul were separated. the neutral portion isresponsiblefor the hypocholesterolemic activity, while the acid portionshowedanti-inflammatory activity. The active ingredients responsiblefortheuse of the plant in the maintenance of healthy cholesterol levels, are theguggulsterones, specifically guggulsterone E and guggulsterone Z1. guggulhasa complex structure made up of various compounds such as lignans, lipids, diterpenoids and steroids. Ten steroids have been isolated fromtheresin, among these, Z-guggalsterone and E-guggalsterone have been found tohave hypolipidemic effects. The other components of the ethylacetateextractexert a synergistic activity. | | Dosage : | A typical dose of ayurvedically purified guggul is 1500mg.taken two to three times a day. A typical dose of the standardizedethylacetateextract 10 percent of Z and E guggalsterones is 250 mg. AllAyurvedicherbs are purified before they are used. This usually means the additionof other herbs, minerals or other substances to the original herb, inorderto minimize its possible harmful side effects, enhance itspharmacologicallyactive principles and its absorption and assimilation in thephysiology. | | Safety : | A typical dose of ayurvedically purified guggul is 1500mg.taken two to three times a day.
