Prostate Alert: All Men are at Risk!

Bookmark and Share

More and more men suffer from discomfort caused by a walnut-sized gland, which when inflamed creates a cascade of negative effects including troubled sleeping, erectile dysfunction, and infertility. The danger is inevitable as risks increase with age. Read on to find out the top three prostate problems men are suffering from.

Top Three Most Common Prostate Problems
There is a saying that it is the little things that hurt you. The prostate gland, as small as a walnut, can cause a huge deal of trouble to most men as they reach the age of 50. It is quite frustrating to know that one cannot avoid the main root cause of prostate problems, which is aging. All men are at risk. However, lifestyle factors contribute just as much as natural course of aging does and may trigger onset of a prostate disease.

1. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

BPH or prostate enlargement is the growth of the prostate gland to an unhealthy size. As a man ages, his risks of developing BPH also increase. About 1 out of 12 men in their 30's to 40's is diagnosed with BPH; 1 out of 2 men of those who are on their 50's to 60's; and 8 over 10 for men in their 80's. The growth of the prostate tissues causes the prostate to squeeze against the urethra. Since urine travels from the bladder through the urethra, the pressure from the enlarged prostate affects bladder control, thus, causing urination problems such as difficulty to urinate, weak flow, dribbling after urination, dysuria or pain during urination, and nocturia or frequent waking up at night to urinate. Aside from aging, risk factors for BPH include ethnicity, family history, and medical conditions. Some studies reported a higher incidence of BPH in men with obesity, heart and circulatory diseases, and type 2 diabetes.

2. Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. About 1 out of 6 men is diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime. However, only 1 in 35 men dies of prostate cancer as it is a slow-growing type of cancer, which when detected early, could be resolved. Like BPH, the risk of prostate cancer increases with age. About 2 out of every 3 men with prostate cancer are over 65. According to studies, there is no specific cause of prostate cancer; yet, risk factors include genetics and race. Statistics show that African-American men are more likely to get prostate cancer than Caucasians. If one has an immediate relative with prostate cancer, risks are higher that he may also develop the said disease.

3. Prostatitis

Unlike BPH and prostate cancer, prostatitis occurs more often in young and middle-aged men. Only 5% to 10% of men develop this in their lifetime. Prostatitis is the inflammation or infection of the prostate characterized by a burning feeling during urination, frequent urination, fever, and fatigue. One type of prostatitis is caused by bacteria. These are called bacterial prostatitis which is usually addressed by antibiotics. For cases where bacteria are not found, doctors often look into other possible causes of the prostate problem such as a kidney stone or cancer. If these diseases are ruled out, the condition may then be classified as non-bacterial prostatitis, which may be addressed by change in diet, warm baths, and alpha-blocker medications to relax the muscle tissues in the prostate. Risk factors for bacterial prostatitis include infection in the bladder or urethra, trauma from bicycling or horseback riding, dehydration, use of urinary catheter, and HIV infection. So far, the only risk factor known for non-bacterial prostatitis is genetics.
